Pearl are formed in saltwater or fresh water mollusks. Foreign bodies like sand or small parasites get stuck inside and the layers of pearly materials form around it as a defense for the mollusk. The layers are built up like an onion making concentric circles. This means the more layers that build up, then the larger the pearl. All the layers create an iridescent luster that is the shine of the pearl.
